What is counselling?

Counselling is an opportunity to talk in confidence to a trained professional about anything that is worrying you, or making you unhappy or depressed, or makes your life less fulfilling than you would wish. Your counsellor will not offer advice, but it is hoped that over a period of counselling, you will come to understand yourself and your situation more clearly and will be able to see your own way forward.

What will happen in the first session?

You will be introduced to the counsellor who will work with you during your therapy. After explaining how counselling operates, you will be asked to talk through what is bothering you. Towards the end of this session, the counsellor will assess whether he/she can help you and offer you an initial contract of six sessions. This will be reviewed at session five and an offer of further sessions may be made if it is felt that it would be beneficial. Your counsellor will also negotiate a suitable regular donation with you. Special arrangements may be made for anyone in financial difficulties.

Who is eligible for counselling?

We have an equal opportunities policy and welcome clients regardless of the nature of their difficulty, age, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability, culture or beliefs.
If the counsellor feels that this type of therapy is not suitable in any particular case, the service will endeavour to suggest a referral to a more appropriate person or organisation.
