SCHOOL COUNSELLOR ROLE

Open Door Counselling is a BACP Accredited Counselling service with over 60 years experience supporting children, young people, and adults through individual, group, family, and couple work.

Clients present with a wide range of concerns, from everyday stress to complex issues including suicidal thoughts, feelings, and attempts.  Sessions are delivered either face to face from our Birmingham premises or remotely for clients based elsewhere.   We also offer an in house school counselling service. All of our counsellors are qualified, DBS checked and experienced in client work.  The service is rooted in an empathic, compassionate, person-centred approach that provides space for clients to explore all aspects of their lives. 

Role Description:  We are seeking a qualified, experienced and person centred school counsellor to work 4.5 hours in a Birmingham secondary school (close to city centre).  This is a term time only role, at this stage fixed until July 2027.   Start date:  asap. Salary: £3920 per annum, pro rata (dependant on start date)  This includes annual leave entitlement to be used out of term time. The School Counsellor will be located in the school and provide 1-2-1 counselling support to students, offering a safe and confidential environment to explore emotional, social, and academic challenges.  Day-to-day tasks include conducting individual counselling sessions, managing referrals, maintaining accurate case notes, and coordinating with school staff to support student wellbeing. The role involves assessing risk and managing safeguarding concerns, developing appropriate support plans, and signposting to external services when necessary.  

The School Counsellor will also contribute to prevention and early intervention activities as and when requested, such as psycho education, wellbeing workshops, and resources for students, caregivers, and school teams.  You will be required to demonstrated therapeutic skills and qualities, with experience supporting young people in educational settings. You will be required to have a recognised counselling or psychotherapy qualification (e.g., diploma or degree) and eligibility for BACP registration or accreditation. A knowledge of safeguarding, risk assessment, and crisis response in school and community contexts. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills, with a strong commitment to to the person-centered modality.  You will be required to demonstrate a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusive practice. Clinical supervision is provided. The post is subject to safer recruitment procedures.
